Around 1895 Mr R.H. Sands, started a small reupholstery and repair workroom in the ground floor of his house at 21 York Road. He concentrated in the reupholstery field, although he also carried out some ‘special orders’ for customers who having sampled his high standard of workmanship wanted something made from scratch.
From these early beginnings he was able to open a shop in 1908 at 5 Queen Street and expand the range of goods and services into curtains and loose covers as well as the sale of fabrics, cushions and accessories.
Workrooms for both curtain manufacture, reupholstery and furniture manufacture were constructed in 1934, in the garden of his house in York Road.
Just before the Second World War, a shop at the present address, 52 Queen Street was purchased.
In 1952 Mr R.H. Sands semi retired and his son Mr R.R. Sands continued running the Maidenhead branch.
The Maidenhead shop has undergone many alterations and improvements over the years enabling an increasingly high standard of display to be achieved.
Since 1967 when Mr R.R. Sands died, the firm has been run by his son Peter Sands, the third generation in the business.
